The Ghana Adventure Holiday Program

Day 1: Arrival and pickup from the Kotoka International Airport, in Accra, Ghana (airport Code ACC). Transfer to host family home, and rest.

Day 2: In the morning after registration: Lecture on Ghanaian society and culture, followed by a familiarization tour of central Accra. In the afternoon, you will visit the beach side for a time of relaxation and rest. In the evening if it is possible we will arrange for a courtesy call on the mayor of Accra.

Day 3: Morning: Lecture introduction to volunteer projects you expect to work with; Rules and regulation; dos and don?t?s for vistors to Ghana, health and safety tips; staying with host families ? dos and don?ts and expectations.
Afternoon: Sightseeing in the city of Accra: As time allows visit major attractions like the Kwame Nkrumah mausoleum and view souvenirs and historical artifacts symbols of Ghanaian historical civilization; the art center; and the Dr W.E.B Dubois center named after the renown African-American who spent years in the 1960?s helping build the foundation of newly independent Ghana.
Evening: Courtesy call on a traditional chief in Accra city plus cultural entertainment.
Day 4-8: Ghana volunteer work. You will be placed with one of the volunteer projects. Overseas Volunteers in Ghana are free to explore the surrounding areas in their free time.
Day 9: Visit Kumasi, center of old African Ashanti Empire. Overseas volunteers can learn more about Ghana?s rich cultural history including historical Kingdoms and civilizations that existed way before the Europeans came to Africa; witness the famous Kente weaving, Adinkra textile printing and Ahwiaa wood carving. Tour the Manhyia palace museum and learn about the legendary Ashanti king Osei Tutu.

Day 10: Elmina Castle   - founded by the Portuguese in 1482 to protect the gold-rich lands; and if time allows, volunteer abroad will visit the Cape Coast Castle also build by the Portuguese to protect their interest in the land of Gold.

Day 11: Kakum National Park:  Comprised of undisturbed virgin rainforest, with and excellent canopy walkway, from where you can see much of Ghana?s indigenous plant life, rare butterflies, birds, animals including the extraordinary bongo and the forest elephant.
