Women Prisons Voluntary Service

Guatemala is among 15 countries in the world where Non-sentenced prisoners make up the majority of the prison population. In some cases, prisoners also continue to be held after the expiration of their sentences. International Volunteer Travel partners with local NGOs in Guatemala to provide mental and emotional support for women in prisons through motivation, and other forms of organized activities. This volunteer work is emotionally and psychologically challenging but at the same time immensely rewarding. Volunteer abroad who sign up for volunteer work with imprisoned women will assist in teaching them to read and write; teaching English, aerobics, arts and crafts and teaching other special life skills

Spanish Language Requirements

Two weeks of Guatemala Spanish study is required for all applicants. One week is required for those fluent in Spanish. You can take our Survival Spanish or Spanish Study Abroad programs to meet requirements.

Guatemala Program Highlights

Age Limit:

18 and over; Project open to Women only.

Free Program:
Volunteer placement is free for all those who sign up for our Spanish Study Abroad Program.

Location:
Xela

Length of Program:
2 to 24 weeks.

Starting Dates:
2nd and 4th Wednesday of every Month. Plan on Arriving the day before.

Airport Arrival Time: Preferably by 11:00 AM

Accommodation and Meals:
Accommodation provided with special selected Host families. 3 local Guatemalan home meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are provided per day.

Transportation:
10-20 minutes walk from home.

Schedule:
Mondays to Fridays. 4 to 5 hours daily.
