Nepal is a landlocked country rich in culture and scenic beauty, bordering India and China. It has a population of about 27.6 million. According to the Human Development Report (2003), Nepal is among the poorest and the least developed countries in the world with a purchasing power (GDP) of $1,500.
Nepal’s ethnic, culture and language are as diverse as it’s geography. There are about 75 different ethnic groups speaking about 50 different languages. Nepal is the only official Hindu state in the world, with Hindus making up 86.2% of the populations; Buddhists, 7.8%; Muslims, 3.8%; while Christians and others make up the rest.
Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal
Located
in a valley surrounded by beautiful green hills, Kathmandu is the
nation’s capital and the largest city. Kathmandu has all the
characteristics of a sprawling city; traffic jams, internet cafés,
nightclubs, restaurants, motorbikes and rooftops scattered with
satellite dishes.
Kathmandu abounds with temples, shrines and stupas where both Buddhists and Hindus go to pray. In addition to being a cultural and religious hub, Kathmandu is also home to all embassies, international travel agencies and many businesses.
Geographical Diversity
Nepal one of the few countries in South Asia that has spectacular geographic scenery. It is a very mountainous and hilly country comprising a total of 147,181 square kilometers of land.
Nepal has great physical diversity, ranging from the Terai Plains in the south, to the famous Mount Everest in the north, with a height of about 8,800 meters above sea level.
Nepal is divided into three broad regions: the high mountain Himalayan region, the Hill Region, and the lowland Plains (Terai). Nepal geography of lowlands, hills and high mountains often accentuated by valleys between mountain ranges has made the country one of the most spectacular and breathtaking places in the world and among the most visited places.
