Internships Abroad in Tanzania
International
Volunteer Travel offers internship placement in every area that we
offer volunteer abroad placement. Our internship programs are suitable
for nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals, prospective
majors, pre-program students, teachers, gap year students, and
basically anyone with or without any prior training.
Tanzania Teaching Internships
International interns in Tanzania teaching program will be attached to a school (pre-school to high school) or an adult literacy program.
Tanzania teaching internship work include; helping teachers in the class, reading, making materials, teaching English, arts and crafts, sports, activities and games, and helping kids with homework. You can teach at the nursery, elementary (primary) and secondary school levels.
At the adult literacy program, interns will teach English to Adults and help the local Adult educators develop programs for adult literacy. You can also help by collecting and bringing with you computers, used and new books on issues of interest to adults such as small-scale farming, small business management, primary health and hygiene, etc for the adult education centers in Tanzania.
Tanzania Internship work with Children
Interns will be placed with local orphanages, street children programs, etc. Duties will include teaching English in the schools that the kids attend, after school tutoring, assisting in preparing meals for the kids, bathing the children, and doing the dishes, organizing games and sports, and fundraising activities such as proposal writing, etc.
Tanzania Heath Care Internships
Interns
will either be attached to administrative field offices or health
facilities including clinics and hospitals. At health facilities, you
can also work as a dental or medical assistant volunteer at one of the
local hospitals. Generally you will assist/support the doctor/dentists
or clinician in the normal routine of medical work e.g. taking vital
signs, dressing wounds, taking patients history, counseling patients,
providing assurance and moral support to patients’ family, disbursing
minor medicines etc.
Interns with the public health and education programs can be placed at medical facilities or in the field but they will not deal with patients directly. Most of the work entails computer and database creation and management for patient record keeping; computer training for hospital staff; public health brochure and publication making; community education to create public awareness on common diseases; and public health program monitoring and evaluation.
Professional Requirements: Interns wanting to be placed with hospitals and clinics in Tanzania need not be trained medics or nurses; students, paramedics and pre-program students are allowed provided they bring student ID. Public health programs do not require any of ID.
Tanzania Internships With AIDS and HIV Projects
International Volunteer Travel partners with hospitals and medical centers in Tanzania, to reduce the spread of HIV through voluntary educational and medical interventions. Volunteers working abroad with the HIV/AIDS Awareness program in Tanzania will assist with Community Based education on HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Other duties will entail creating public health brochures and publications, and monitoring and evaluation of existing intervention programs. This project will entail both field and office work.
Tanzania Community and Culture Internship
Interns with this projects will assist local people document and preserve their culture and traditions by collecting and documenting relevant information and if possible developing a website. Interns abroad in Tanzania will also work with the Catholic church relief program, the Lutheran church Aid and other local churches to examine and analyses causes of poverty, create community development awareness, come up with development ideas and find ways of encouraging communities to initiate their own development projects.
Tanzania Nature and Environment Internship
Water
scarcity is becoming an increasingly biting problem in Moshi area of
Tanzania International interns with this project will help alleviate
water scarcity problems related to deforestation by participating in
tree planting activities plus talking to the local communities to raise
awareness about deforestation and resulting problems.
African volunteers with this program may also work with Kilimanjaro water management project to address issues of water scarcity in the Mount Kilimanjaro area. Some of the issues that need addressing include defining the water scarcity problem; designing a program of educating the public including developing relevant materials; linking the water scarcity problem to environmental degradation in a way that locals would understand so as to bridge the knowledge gap between managers and users of resources, etc. These projects will entail both field and office work.

Tanzania Program Highlights
Age Limit: 18 and over; Under 18 if accompanied by guardian or with Gap Year or Group Volunteer Abroad program.
Starting Dates: 1st and 3rd Thursday of every Month; Plan to arrive the day before.
Airport Arrival Time: Preferably by 4:00 PM
Accommodation, & Meals: Carefully selected Tanzanian households; 3 Tanzanian meals provided per day.
Transport to Project: Projects within walking distance, else bus fare will not exceed USD 0.50 per day.
Schedule: Mondays to Fridays. 3 to 6 hours daily.
Program Costs: Tanzania program fees available here.
Language Requirements: Basic Swahili strongly encouraged but not required; working knowledge of English required.
Length of Program: 1 to 12 weeks
