Tanzania Heath care Volunteering

As an overseas medical volunteer (doctors, nurses, dentists, program students or interns), you will work with local staff in support of the health care efforts.

Mainstream Health Care Volunteering

You can also work as a dental or medical assistant volunteer at one of the local hospitals. Generally you will assist/support the doctor/dentists or clinician in the normal routine of medical work e.g. taking vital signs, dressing wounds, taking patients history, counseling patients, providing assurance and moral support to patients’ family, disbursing minor medicines etc.

There are a number of medical and dental clinics in Northern Tanzania where you can be placed. We also have wonderful international volunteer placement opportunities for dentists and dental technicians and hygienists in a number of Tanzania hospital dental units.  You will find the Mainland Tanzania dental and medical volunteering abroad opportunity enlightening and rewarding.

Professional Requirements: All mainstream health care volunteers (doctors, nurses, dentists, etc) who wish to be based in hospitals and smaller medical facilities need proof of training such as practicing license, etc. Students are pre-program students, and paramedics, are allowed as interns and not volunteers. Students need to show student ID.

Public Health Volunteering

In addition to hands-on health care volunteering, Tanzania welcomes medical and non-medical volunteers to work in public health and education programs. Such programs can be at the medical facilities or in the field and include computer and database creation and management for patient record keeping; computer training for hospital staff; public health brochure and publication making; community education to create public awareness on common diseases and how to prevent them including children malnutrition, malaria, HIV and AIDS, etc; public health program monitoring and evaluation.

Combination of Programs

Tanzania Program Highlights

Age Limit: 18 and over; Under 18 if accompanied by guardian or with Gap Year or Group Volunteer Abroad program.

Starting Dates: 1st and 3rd Thursday of every Month; Plan to arrive the day before.

Airport Arrival Time: Preferably by 4:00 PM

Accommodation, & Meals: Carefully selected Tanzanian households; 3 Tanzanian meals provided per day.

Transport to Project: Projects within walking distance, else bus fare will not exceed USD 0.50 per day.

Schedule: Mondays to Fridays. 3 to 6 hours daily.

Language Requirements: Basic Swahili strongly encouraged but not required; working knowledge of English required.

Length of Program: 1 to 12 weeks
