International Volunteer Travel

volunteer abroad placement in Zanzibar. Our internship
programs are suitable for nurses, doctors, and
other medical professionals, prospective majors,
pre-program students, teachers, gap year students,
and basically anyone with or without any prior
training.
Zanzibar Teaching Internships
International interns in Zanzibar teaching program will be attached to a school (pre-school to high school) or an adult literacy program.
Zanzibar teaching internship work include; helping teachers in the class, reading, making materials, teaching English, arts and crafts, sports, activities and games, and helping kids with homework. You can teach at the elementary (primary) or secondary school levels.
Zanzibar Internship work with Children
Interns will be placed with local orphanages, street children programs, etc. Duties will include teaching English in the schools that the kids attend, after school tutoring, assisting in preparing meals for the kids, bathing the children, and doing the dishes, organizing games and sports, and fundraising activities such as proposal writing, etc.
Zanzibar
Heath Care Internships
Interns will either be attached to administrative
field offices or health facilities including
clinics and hospitals. At health facilities,
you can also work as a dental or medical assistant
volunteer at one of the local hospitals. Generally
you will assist/support the doctor/dentists or
clinician in the normal routine of medical work
e.g. taking vital signs, dressing wounds, taking
patients history, counseling patients, providing
assurance and moral support to patients family,
disbursing minor medicines etc.
Interns
with the public health and education programs
can be placed at medical facilities or in
the field but they will not deal with patients
directly. Most of the work entails computer
and database creation and management for
patient record keeping; computer training
for hospital staff; public health brochure
and publication making; community education
to create public awareness on common diseases;
and public health program monitoring and
evaluation.
Professional Requirements:
Interns wanting to be placed with hospitals and clinics in Zanzibar need not be trained medics or nurses; students, paramedics and pre-program students are allowed provided they bring student ID. Public health programs do not require any of ID.
Zanzibar Internships With AIDS and HIV Projects
International Volunteer Travel partners with hospitals and medical centers in Zanzibar, to reduce the spread of HIV through voluntary educational and medical interventions. Volunteers working abroad with the HIV/AIDS Awareness program in Zanzibar will assist with Community Based education on HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Other duties will entail creating public health brochures and publications, and monitoring and evaluation of existing intervention programs. This project will entail both field and office work.
Combination of Programs
In addition to Volunteer placement in Zanzibar, the International Volunteer Travel also offers opportunities for Internships Abroad in Zanzibar, the Language and Cultural Experience, and the Zanzibar Adventure Tours and Holidays program. With exception of the Language and Cultural Experience, which must be combined with another program, all Zanzibar programs are offered independently or in combination.

Airport Arrival Time: Preferably by 4:00 PM
Accommodation, & Meals: Special volunteer house or carefully selected Zanzibari households; 3 Zanzibari meals provided per day.
Transport to Project: Most projects within walking distance otherwise cost will normally not exceed USD 0.50 per day.
Schedule:
Mondays
to Fridays. 3 to 6 hours daily (10
to 20 hours weekly).

Language Requirement: Basic Swahili strongly encouraged but not required; working knowledge of English required. International volunteers and interns can sign up for the Language and culture program to acquire basic to advanced knowledge skills.
